E-signatures for freelancers

Freelancers do not have a contracts department. They have a client who wants to start Monday and a document that needs signing today, and the tools built for enterprise legal teams price per seat as though there were a team.

FairSign is $12 a month for unlimited signature requests, and signing your own documents is free forever. If you send four contracts a month, you should not be paying $30 a seat.

Self-signing is free, local & private, never uploaded. Sending for signature needs a free account (just your email).

What freelancers actually need signed

  • The contract itself: before any work starts, which is the only moment you have real leverage.
  • Change orders: a one-page signed variation when the client adds scope. This is where freelance projects lose their margin.
  • NDAs: usually theirs, sometimes yours, often needed the same afternoon.
  • Deposit confirmations: so the payment schedule is documented rather than assumed.
  • IP assignment: because payment alone does not transfer copyright, and a client who assumed it did will find out at the worst time.
  • Testimonial and portfolio permissions: a short signed note is worth more than a friendly email.
  • Kill-fee acknowledgements: when a project is cancelled mid-way and you need what you are owed in writing.

What costs freelancers money

  • Starting on a verbal yes. The contract is not bureaucracy; it is the thing that gets you paid when the client's budget owner changes.
  • Verbal change orders. "Can you just also…" is the single most expensive sentence in freelancing, and a signed one-pager settles it.
  • Paying per seat for a tool built for enterprises. You are one person sending a handful of documents.
  • Uploading a client's confidential brief to a third-party server just to add your own signature to your own contract.

Common questions

Is $12 a month worth it for a few contracts?

If it removes one payment dispute a year, it has paid for itself many times over. And if you only ever sign your own documents, self-sign mode is free on every plan with no card required.

Do my clients need to sign up?

No. They receive an emailed link, sign in their browser, and both of you get the completed PDF. Asking a client to create an account is a way to lose a signature.

Can I send from my own brand?

Business plans add your logo to signing pages. On Pro the signing page is clean and unbranded rather than plastered with someone else's marketing.
